On the third day of Careers-mas, Gary gave to me… Three sections for your covering letter!
A cover letter should have three main sections:
- Which post are you applying for, where did you see it? Why do you want this job/want to work for this particular employer? Not applying for a specific job? What are you looking for? When are you available?
- Why should they hire you? Highlight some of your main key skills and achievements in relation to the criteria on the person specification. Try and think of your USP – Unique Selling Point – what is going to set you apart from all the other applicants?
- End on a positive note. Say you look forward to discussing your skills at interview. Maybe add in one or two relevant experiences or examples that make you suitable for this role.
