Based within our Creative Services Department, this is an exciting opportunity to join our busy, commercial in-house studio dealing with all the company’s requirements to support product, sales and marketing.

Must be proficient with Adobe software including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign will be required to put together layouts for print and digital outputs, varying from catalogue layouts to social media graphics and everything in-between.

Alumni Spotlight: Johnny McCann

Johnny McCann, Graphic Design alumnus and also current member of staff!

After graduating from his BA (Hons) Graphic Design, Johnny worked initially as a freelance web designer in Cumbria, before returning to Northern Ireland to work as an IT Technician for Hewlett Packard. This was followed by an art and design placement teaching post back at the University of Cumbria and, when a job in the IT-Services department came up, he decided to change career paths and is now Senior IT Technician (North).

Alongside his job, Johnny enjoys street performing and fundraising for the NSPCC with the 501st Star Wars costuming group. He also fronts a band called Spookshow and organises the annual SOPHIE fundraisers, Labyrinth Ball and Zombie Walk for Carlisle. He likes to help where he can in the community by wearing the Iron Man costume he built to raise funds for children’s causes.

Johnny regularly hosts events and runs a costuming group where the members learn construction techniques in his home/workshop which they have dubbed ‘The Tardis House’ because of its big blue door and ‘bigger on the inside’ nature. On Saturday 18 April 2015 he has set himself his biggest challenge yet; organising and hosting ‘Edencon’, a movies, games and popular media convention to be held at the University of Cumbria’s Brampton Road campus in Carlisle.

The event will feature arts and crafts stalls, competitions, guest talks to benefit anyone wanting to work in media, including a film industry talk from Honorary Fellow Mally Chung (James Bond, Doomsday, Sherlock Holmes) and a panel talk from several of the most respected artists and writers in the British comics industry including our very own Associate Lecturer in Visual Culture, Nick Dodds. Rate of pay: £6.50 per hour for 150 hours. Work to be on a full or part time basis. Timing and hours to be discussed at interview.

This role is offered through the University of Cumbria’s Business Growth Hub project, working with a local business for a total of 150 hours. Work can be undertaken on a full or part time basis. Timing and hours to be discussed at interview.

Business Need:

To develop enhanced web and advertising based services and resources for the benefit of the existing and prospective client base.

Overall Purpose of the Role:

To assist the design studio meet work demands from existing clients and provide ideas and new techniques for web and advertising based services and resources.

For the successful candidate there is the possibility of further work following on from the project.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Gain an understanding and awareness of the resources and services offered by the business.
  • Re-design website / promotional artwork for specific clients identified by the business.
  • Once the designs are agreed, proceed to develop in line with a project plan agreed with the owner.
  • Contribute to the development of ideas and techniques for the design studio.

They are looking for a recent graduate with a Graphic Design or Multimedia degree who is an expert in Creative suite and html/CSS literate, to gain some experience (Paid work placement) in their studio. You would be working on a wide range of projects across varied disciplines from 1/4 page ads to logo design, from email campaigns to making brews, and everything in-between. You would be ideally based in Manchester. You will need to be a recent graduate with a Graphic Design or Multimedia degree who is an expert in Creative suite and is html/CSS literate. A full time position is available to the right person.

Product Designer – Planet Knox Ltd

Planetknox need to strengthen the design department in order to grow and develop innovative new products, so we are looking for a highly inventive and motivated Product Designer to join the design team.

Business Need:

To improve online presence through search engine optimisation, updating design of websites and social media. Currently ranking on search engine websites is low and there is not enough experience or staff time to adequately improve our online presence.

Exhibition Designer – The Freshwater Biological Association (FBA)

The FBA requires an exhibition to be produced for the Clear Waters Oral History Project. You role will be to design the Clear Waters Oral History project exhibition which includes interpretation panels and a listening station.  You will also contribute to the design of the project website which will complement the exhibition.  Your role will include involvement in the production of the final exhibition by liaising with suppliers.

The Clear Waters Oral History project commenced in April 2013 and has collected audio files of interviews, photographs and other research items, which will all be part of the final exhibition and website. The oral history recordings, photography and research have been collected for the exhibition and website. The Exhibition Designer will join the existing team working on the final stage of the project and will be involved with the design brief and concept.

Customer Services Co-ordinator – Penrith Building Society

This role will require you to assess and develop the ‘customer journey’ and the way the business currently responds to customer needs in order for the Society to enhance services and to reach new markets. You will develop and introduce ideas for a more personal and bespoke service for each customer with a more contemporary approach, whilst maintaining relationships built on trust and traditional values. You will be a fresh pair of eyes to evaluate how the business currently operates and you will make recommendations to improve the customer experience.

You will also undertake market research in areas such as what customers are looking for and what they might need; brand awareness; and responses to the customer experience.

The post will initially be offered for 8 weeks, commencing mid January 2014. There is a possibility that a role could be offered on a permanent basis at the end of the placement, for the right candidate.
